When you’re filling up your esky, one necessary ingredient to keep the whole thing cold is a bag of ice. Instead of slogging your way to the nearest servo, The Kitchn recommends you simply fill up some old water bottles and toss them in the freezer.
The benefit here is two-fold. First off, you don’t have to go to the store to buy a bag of ice. Second, you get to drink the water when the ice melts. Just fill up a few old water bottles with water, toss them in the freezer the night before, and you’re good to go.

I clean 2 liter bottles of milk once empty, fill up with water and freeze them. When I need ice for my esky, I drop it on the concrete a few time to break it up a bit and use an axe/tomahawk/knife to cut the base off and empty the crushed ice into the esky.
Keeps things a lot cooler! But having a bottle whole is good as you can reuse it etc.
If you want to re-use the bottle don’t fill it all the way up, leave a bit of air space or slightly squash the bottle so it can expand a bit when it freezes. When water freezes to ice it expands and the bottle might split or crack if it’s completely full of water.
