Pretty much no one has time to prepare an elaborate multi-course meal each night, but whatever you’re making (be it a simple roasted chicken or a bowl or lentils), this flavorful trifecta from Sarah Britton will make suppertime feel downright refined.

By using one (or all) of the following ingredients, Sarah takes her self-proclaimed “Monk’s food” to new, flavorful heights.
- Fresh herbs such as basil, dill, or mint are pretty obvious choices (and you can buy whole plants for super cheap!) and can be tossed in at the last moment for vibrant, herbaceous flavour.
- Toasted nuts like walnuts and pecans add texture, substance, and rich flavour to salads and stews alike.
- Citrus zest brightens the heck out of everything it touches, from proteins to vegetables, and even eggs.
Just one of these ingredients upgrade almost any meal from “fine” to “very delicious” but add all three and you’re, as Britton puts it, “really going to flavortown.”

To be fair, herbs are a collective of ingredients (as are nuts). Adding the “ingredient” herbs to a margherita pizza would not necessarily make a good one… whereas adding basil would go a long way to making a great one!
I don’t think I’ve ever read a recipe that calls for 1 teaspoon of herbs…
I guess the article wouldn’t have been as eye catching if it had been titled “Eight hundred and seventy eight Ingredients That Can Take Any Dish From Boring To Flavorful”
