Keep Your Screens Off Until You’ve Finished Your Morning Routine

When you first wake up in the morning, do you check your phone? If so, you might be used to having your day hijacked before you get started. Change this by making it the last thing you check.

As business blog Entrepreneur points out, it’s all too common for most of us to roll out of bed, grab the phone, and immediately start checking notifications. The problem is, this gives the rest of the world the opportunity to push a priority change on your morning. You get a message you have to reply to or a story you have to read. If you make your phone the last thing you check, you have time to wake up, get a shower, eat breakfast, meditate, exercise, or do any of the other things you want to do before someone else tells you what to do:

When you dive straight into emails, texts and Facebook, you lose focus and your morning succumbs to the wants and needs of other people. It’s much healthier to take those precious first moments of the day to do something relaxing that sets a calm, positive tone for your day. Jumping right into electronics has the opposite effect — it’s a frantic way to start your day. Exercising, meditating, or even watching the birds out the window are all great ways to start the day.

What your morning routine is can be up to you, but the goal here is to do something tangible for yourself before you answer to the internet. Our devices have a nasty habit of commandeering our attention whether we mean to or not. Give yourself a fighting chance in the morning.
