Killer Interview Question: On A Scale Of One To 10, How Weird Are You?

An employee who thinks outside the box can be a valuable business asset — even if they're a tad eccentric. This interview question will help you discover a true original.

The following tip comes from Tony Hsieh, CEO of online shoe and clothing shop While the exact number isn't particularly important, you can learn a lot about a person by the way they answer the question. It can also be useful if you want to ferret out office bores and strung-out crazies.

"If you're a one, you probably are a little bit too straight-laced for the Zappos culture," Hsieh explains. "If you're a 10, you might be too psychotic for us."

    Weird is subjective though, what I consider weird might not be weird to someone else, and vice versa.

    My response: ..And of course the answer to that is apples!

    Very weird people don't think they're weird though, so they'll always answer 1.

    Is that scale linear, or logarithmic / exponential (like the earthquake Richter scale)?
    I would rate myself about 6 to 7, but it all really depends on the scale.
