Here’s How Long It Takes To Read Popular Children’s Books

It’s important for kids to learn literacy skills. And some of the classic books we read as children come to be our favourite stories as adults. It’s interesting to know just how long it takes kids to read those classics. Whether you’re gauging your child’s reading speed or simply trying to plan how many nights it will take to finish a bedtime book, that info can come in handy.

Using fluency standards from literacy company Learning A-Z, the folks at Personal Creations calculated how long it takes kids to read a number of popular children’s books. For each book, they used the average reading speed based on the appropriate year level.

They put Where the Wild Things Are at a year two reading level, estimating it should take about 4.2 minutes to complete, according to fluency recommendations. Charlotte’s Web, a year four level book, takes about 6.8 hours.
