Spotify’s Next Update Brings Video, Podcasts, Smart Playlists

Spotify announced today that podcasts, video content and playlists generated to perfectly fit your mood are all coming in its next major update. Here’s everything you need to know.

A new service within Spotify, simply called “Now”, will generate playlists for you based on your music tastes, demographic, and the time of day. Spotify will automatically try to create the perfect playlist for your early morning, commute, workday, and even bedtime. Anything from music, to podcasts, to video clips can pop up in there. The video content coming will be clips of shows from a wide variety of partners, including Comedy Central, ABC, BBC, ESPN, NBC and TED. Nerdist News will even air three hours earlier on Spotify.

Lastly, Spotify announced a new feature for those who like to listen to music while they run or workout. The Spotify app will now use your phone’s accelerometer to find music that matches your pace so you can keep your runner’s high going. Spotify has also created custom workout music that can play back at different tempos and “magically rearrange” itself based on your workout. The update starts rolling out in the US, UK, Germany, and Sweden from today on iPhones, and will continue over the next few weeks. No specific word yet on the Australian release date but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long. The running feature is available immediately.
