Why lattes? you ask. Reviews analysis by Yelp suggests that despite all the hype around the flat white going global, a latte is the most commonly-discussed choice for Australians. Here are the most popular coffee types in Australia per Yelp’s ranking:
- Latte
- Espresso
- Flat white
- Cappuccino
- Long Black
Yelp also analysed its reviews to identify the 100 most popular places to score a latte. Its listings cover Australia’s five most populous states (NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and SA) and largely feature capital city options — apologies to the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

They missed the entire suburb of Brunswick! I guess no one around here bothers to use Yelp. Also a lot of people don’t realise that the proper way to drink coffee is the short black (espresso; sans milk), where as a latte is more of a milk drink with coffee in it. Reviews of lattes will not really help determine if a café makes a good pure espresso.
And Brunswick probably has more coffee roasters than any suburb/town in the world!
Seems like a fairly big miss to skip Canberra. A local roaster team just won the world barista championship.
Review numbers will be super low however compared to bigger cities that are more densely populated, or tourist destinations. Most of the good coffee in Canberra is nowhere near where large businesses are situated, or tourists would go.
Which goes to show how useless the map is. If tourists are the ones making the reviews on Yelp, unless they’re from the mediterranean, their taste in coffee isn’t necessarily going to be that good. Likewise, if it’s based on large numbers, you’re just going to miss all those really good small places.
So how can you possibly post this story as Australia’s 100 Best Lattes and leave off some states/territories. By definition the headline is a lie.
This is just a crap plug for Yelp – which has hardly any users in Australia, and only covers the cities that they released in their top 100 (they did a food one too with exactly the same failings)
Anyway – there’s great coffee in Canberra, and no one who gives a fig about Yelp. I’d say that makes us the winners here…
By the way Lifehacker – when you say that this “largely feature(s) capital city options — apologies to the ACT” you do realise we are THE capital city don’t you?
The others are just state capitals…
This list may have been handy a decade ago but in my experience you can find a good quality, well made coffee pretty much anywhere these days. I’ve had coffees from three or four of the shops on the list and would consider them good coffees but not any more special than a tonne of other places out there.

ONA may have won world’s best barista, but damn they need to teach their regular staff how to make coffee properly. I’ve watched the quality go down exponentially at the Fyshwick store since 2011, most people in my office now refuse to go there. ONA winning an award certainly does not mean that their cafe’s make good coffee, but congrats to Sasa anyway!

Agree, re: Yelp. Can’t believe their reviews when it’s manipulated for their paying customers:
“The plaintiff in the suit, a veterinary hospital in Long Beach, CA, is said to have requested that Yelp remove a negative review from the website, which was allegedly refused by the San Francisco startup, after which its sales representatives repeatedly contacted the hospital demanding payments of roughly $300 per month in exchange for hiding or deleting the review.”
