It’s so nice when science intersects with food and food organisation. Over at Make, Wayne Hammond came up with a way to organise spices by their botanical taxonomy and a system that looks much like the periodic table of elements.
He designed U-shaped shelves to fit an unused area in his kitchen and arranged the jars according to this table:
Specifically, the spices are organised by order-family-genus-species.

If you’re going the chemical route, a diagram of the molecule for each compound would make a nice extra touch.

I would have thought 1. Easy to find 2. Easy to access 3. Easy to store.
