Disguise Thinning Hair By Ditching The Products

While thinning hair certainly isn’t the end of the world, it is annoying. The Wall Street Journal spoke with stylist Diana Schmidtke to get some tips on disguising it, and one suggestion is to ditch the hair products altogether.

With thinning hair, the best disguise is to minimise how much light’s hitting your scalp and highlighting those troubled spots. For that reason, Schmidtke suggests ditching the product because they tend to just add more shine:

Ms. Schmidtke counsels staying away from gels and pomades because “they have such high shine. When you have shiny products, you’re going to have light reflecting off the product,” says Ms. Schmidtke…

Certain hair gels may cause pieces of hair to clump together and separate, Ms. Schmidtke notes. “That allows the light to penetrate the scalp, drawing even more attention to a troubled spot,” she says.

She also suggests sticking to shorter hairstyles that push your hair in a more forward direction instead of pulling it back, washing your hair less frequently, and staying away from the blow dryer’s higher heat settings.
