Plex For Android Update Simplifies Licences, Adds Photo Casting

Android: Plex is one of the best personal media streaming services with one of the more confusing purchasing models. Today, the company is simplifying it to one simple app on the Play Store.

The way it works now is there’s one free Plex app on the Google Play Store. To unlock streaming functionality, there’s a one-time $5 in-app purchase. Users who previously paid $5 for the app will already have this unlocked (and, in fact, the Play Store listing is the same version). PlexPass users can also unlock the functionality by logging in. The separate, free app that used to solely be for PlexPass users has now been deprecated.

It’s not all licence reshuffling, of course. You can now also use Plex to show off your phone’s photos using a Chromecast or similar casting device. The app has also been updated with some of those fancy Android 5.0 interface elements.
