If you’re out camping and you forgot your bottle opener, reach for your spoon. Weblog Food52 shows us how to use one to open a tasty brew.
There are lots of ways to open up a bottle of beer, like using a butter knife, but the spoon trick uses simple leverage like a bottle opener does to pop the top off.
- Wrap your hand around the top of the bottle just below the cap.
- Grab your spoon by pinching the curved between your thumb and pointer finger.
- Get the lip of the spoon under the cap and slowly pry it off using your thumb or finger wrapped around the bottle as a leverage point.
- If it doesn’t pop right off, slowly make your way around the cap and it should come off easily.
It’s important to take things nice and slow when you do this. We gave it a try and it works like a charm as long as you’re patient. Spoons can do wonders for you when you’re camping and forgot other tools. You can even open a can of food with one.

A cigarette lighter, or a softdrink bottle are 100x easier than a spoon for this. Plus it won’t matter if you damage those. Pointy bits of metal on your spoon are not fun.
Pretty much this, almost anything can be used to open a beer. I’ve used the cardboard box that the six pack comes in a few times.
I always use keys. Just don’t pick a flimsy one and don’t use your house or car key as they are kind of important.
