Prepare Your Escape Route To Stay Sane During The Holidays

Family get-togethers can be great, but they can also cause a lot of stress. In order to preserve your sanity and enjoy your holidays as much as possible, block some time away to recover and relax.

Author and therapist Beth Burgess writes at Smyls:

If you know your family will be too much to handle over the holidays, then make a plan for peaceful ways to escape and get a bit of space. Arrange to meet friends over the festive season, so you get a break from your family. Take mini time-outs, like going for short walks, popping out to the car or corner shop, or going into the garden to get some fresh air. Use that space to breathe deeply and regroup before you have to go back in.

It’s not just about how much time you spend with family, but the quality of it. Family will see through you being fake when you’re grouchy or have had too much. A break from family could mean that you’ll be in a good mood during the moments you do spend with them. It may also become easier for you to focus and be mindful as well.
