Android/iOS/BlackBerry: Looking for a cheap hotel room for tonight? Mobile app HotelQuickly offers last-minute deals based on your current location.
HotelQuickly originally launched in Hong Kong, but has now expanded to cover Australia and New Zealand as well. Other Asian destinations covered in the app include Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam
Discounted rooms aren’t released until 8am in your search city. The app uses your phone to identify your current location, but you can switch to any other supported city (useful if you’re looking for a room for somewhere you’re flying to later in the day). Your can then view rooms on a map, dive into individual hotels, or shake your phone if you want the app to pick for you. You can book for either tonight or one day forward, for up to five nights.
The app claims to guarantee the cheapest available room, a trick it achieves in part by automatically taking 3 per cent off the standard rack rate. When I checked for hotels in locations I’m familiar with, it came up with many of the same deals as you’d see on other sites — but if you’re hunting for a last-minute room, then having an additional option up your sleeve never hurts.
