Elevator Pitch: Love My Fur Kids

Elevator Pitch is a regular feature on Lifehacker where we profile startups and new companies and pick their brains for entrepreneurial advice. This week, we’re talking with Deb Edwards from Love My Fur Kids.

In 128 words or less, explain your business idea.

Love My Fur Kids is an exciting new business currently looking for licensees who LOVE animals and are business savvy. We provide a unique type of pet service to the public who are serious about the well-being of their Fur Kids. Love My Fur Kids takes the stress out of finding trustworthy, reliable and loving carers when pet owners go away. Love My Fur Kids look after pets in the comfort of their own home.

Our business offers an effective business model, systems, support, training and tools so licensees can get started immediately in their business. We are all about making pet services accessible, creating a community of licensees, opening up opportunities for co-operative growth and support and true love for Fur Kids.

What strategies are you using to grow and finance your idea?

Love My Fur Kids is a self- funded business however there is always interest from like-minded investors who can show us synergies in our business ethos. Our strategy is to build a reputable brand that the public can recognise that is synonymous with quality, hassle free, secure and reliable care of their Fur Kids while they are away in the comfort of their own homes. Growth is expected to come organically as the brand gets recognised for these qualities by the public at large. Throughout this process we will be listening to the needs of clients, engaging with the community and progressing with technology advancements in order to provide the best and right type of care and service to our clients, Fur Kids and our licensees.

What’s the biggest challenge facing your business?

Lack of unified legislation at a national level for pet care and the pet sitting industry at large in order to stop rogue businesses providing ill care to animals. Respective council restrictions in different areas, keeping up with demand and of course the cat and dog hair on clothes!

How do your differentiate your business from your competitors?

We look after all types of Fur Kids in their own homes and in their own environment. Our licensee structures give individual business owners the opportunity to expand on services and manage the business in a way that best fits with their location and lifestyle. They are part of the community they live in. As a business community we can network together and create a culture of support, knowledge and resources for our clients, our Fur Kids and business growth.

What one phone, tablet or PC application could you not live without?

I use Dropbox every day. It’s a great way to keep everyone on the same page, and minimise email traffic. The freedom and flexibility of the app is probably why it’s so useful. Being able to access Dropbox from any device at any time has saved my bacon countless times! We also have plans for a Love My Fur Kids app at some stage down the road, which will complement our existing service nicely.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received?
