Consumer Reports interviewed Brian Wasnink, author of Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life. He shared an easy tip to avoid some calories and still enjoy yourself:

A typical person can cut calorie consumption by 9 per cent if he simply avoids packaged or processed foods.

Wansink’s referring to snacks before your big meal, but you can apply that to dessert, side dishes or even main courses. If you can eat the same thing somewhere else, skip it. Save room (and calories) for the unique offerings.
