I hate ironing and my wife insists on ironing my work shirts for me. She does a great job, but it can sometimes take ages for her to get around to it, so I have to iron the odd one here or there to get through (which I hate). I don’t want to press the issue, cause I already feel really guilty letting her do it. I really want to start taking my shirts to a dry cleaner and get them laundered and pressed, but I don’t want to hurt her feelings. What should I do?
I’ve been making music for a little under a year now and I’ve got a few tracks online, but they only seem to get attention from friends and family. Triple J Unearthed is supposed to be good for music discovery, but I haven’t had a lot of success with it. All the events related to malware and exploits have gotten out of hand as of late. Getting on the Internet is almost like playing russian roulette, you never know if or when you’ll get hit. The term “defense-in-depth” has been used in reference to protecting your computer, not with just one antivirus application, but multiple applications and tools. I’ve heard of people installing AVG, Avast, Spybot, etc all at once. My question is what are some of the best multiple applications (that will play nice with one another) you can install onto your computer to better protect yourself from these risks on the Internet.

I’ve recently had to start driving to work due to a change in my client’s site. As a result I’ve now started to listen to podcasts so that my drive time is not as ‘wasted’. The problem is that I’m finding it very difficult to find enough podcasts I’m interested in to fill the 3 hours per day driving. To note, I’m particularly keen on tabletop game design, tabletop game reviews (eg Shut Up and Sit Down), geek comedy (eg We have Concerns). iTunes feature lists are full of radio recordings as podcasts and stage productions (like Serial, which I actually don’t mind).
My question is, what are the best means of discovering podcasts to my tastes?

I’m looking at expanding a hobby into an ‘on the side’ business. I’ve been doing photography, which I feel may start gathering attention and the possible request of further photoshoots, prints and similar things. I have a rather large bundle of question that I’m going to roll into one. How would I take payment (as most of my potential customers aren’t in my town), organise product and pricing and not let it cut into my full time job?
I would like to know if it is probable that within my lifetime (around 40-50 more years), will a huge change take place and move civilization past fossil fuels?

I’m nearing the end of my engineering degree and need to start looking for a job. However, I find it quite daunting to choose between the huge range of possible jobs that I could do. I understand that in the end I may not have a choice as to what sort of job I do (as it will come down to what jobs I get offered), but my question is, how do you decide what areas to target? For example, the possible roles in engineering range from highly technical roles in R&D or design companies, through to project management style roles in construction and operations. I’m not sure where on this spectrum I want to work (or where I’ll find it most enjoyable), and without actually working in that area I don’t know how to choose. I’m also worried that focussing on one end of the spectrum early in my career will limit me in the future. Do you have any recommendation when looking for your first job out of uni, and the general career progression from there?

The Bunbury city council in Wa are wanting to reperpose the land next door to me for high density housing which does not fit in with the location or the surrounding area apart from that they a grossly undervaluing the land to the extent that a typical block of 500m2 land sells for approx from $220000 upwards and they are selling this land for 500m2 at $25000 total land size is actually 2.1773 hectares, we have been petitioning the council we have also written letters of complaint as this smells fishy do we have a place in Wa that we can say hey the council is doing something wrong we as citizens dealing with them direct have had no joy can some one else step in is their an ombudsmen for that ???

I have this friend who has been down on his luck the last 5 years of his life, getting into drugs and alcohol abuse, losing several good paying jobs due to his lack of respect for his co workers and superiors, and I really want to help him but dont want to come across as “that” friend who is far better off and thinks he knows better. I live in NSW and earlier this year my dentist found a problem with my front tooth. They referred me to an endodontist who then referred me to a periodontist. They told me I had tooth resorption which basically means my gum was eating my tooth. Since it’d gone on for some time (months between appointments) the only option was a tooth implant. I’ve had problems with the Periodontist after the first initial appointment and after they got my money.
I had the tooth taken out during July with a denture to hide my missing tooth. On that day and everyday after I’ve had issues with the periodontist. They first asked me to come in early on the day of my surgery instead of 2pm because the anesthesiologist was running late and they wanted to shuffle patients. After the surgery they gave me antibiotics and was told they’d schedule me in the following week for checkups which ended up taking 3 weeks before it happened and my denture ended up with cracks. The antibiotics they gave me I was also allergic to which I’d written down on their paperwork when I first went there.
After that they scheduled me in for surgery to get the screw drilled in but we had more issues. The week before they called to confirm the appointment and ask me if I had my xrays which I had no idea I needed and no referral to get them so I went in early the following morning to get the referral and left work early to get it done. I ended up sick so they postponed to the following week which they had to cancel since the doctor wasn’t in.
The surgery was then set for November but they delayed it twice again due to the doctor not been available (off sick or just not there). They called me to confirm again but this time asked if I had my surgical guide which I hadn’t been given one. So I had to visit their prothodontist who’d made me denture to get one made and now I’m scheduled for surgery in January.
The main points been during the initial appointment I was told I could have all 3 surgeries done before Christmas and haven’t even had the second one yet due to mostly the doctor missing appointments, been sick and not giving me the information/referrals needed. They prescribed me medication I was allergic to which I’d filled out in their paperwork, and I didn’t know it was the one I was allergic to since it didn’t list it anywhere on the packaging.
So Life Hacker, what can I do? Should I lodge a complaint and what can I expect to happen after then? They already have my money so I’m not sure what I can do and its very frustrating.

4 years ago I suffered from a flesh eating bacteria, known as Necrotising Fasciitis, resulting in massive debridement (skin removal) -including the removal of my scrotum- of my frontal pelvic region. I had surgery to use my left thigh to create a scrotal replacement as well as extensive skingraft.
Unfortunately, since then I have suffered chronic pain as well as issues of self-esteem both from the vast scarring. These affect my ability to establish normal intimate relationships, emotionally & physically.
Can you recommend any methods to overcome my physical & psychological issues so I can better prepare myself for any future romantic/intimate relationships?

I’m a home owner and I live up stairs. The house has a fully independent granny flat downstairs which I rent out.
The problem is, that the tenant like to play his musical instrument (guitar) very loudly and very poorly. I wear a pair of headphones to watch tv and play video games, yet I can still hear his loud instrument, enough to distract me from tv/games. I too play the guitar (and piano) and I know practise is required, but I do not understand why he has to play so loudly (and poorly).
I have asked him to quieten down the instrument, but he just ignores my requests. I have suggested methods such as covering the sound hole of the guitar (simple & cheap to make, or buy), stuffing tea towels into the guitar cavity, or just playing softly rather than on full volume all the time, but no avail.
I do not want to lose him as a tenant because he is a decent tenant other the noise and volume issue. Is there something that I can do? Rental agreement is coming up for a re-newal – are there clauses that I can put in to (forcibly) suggest to reduce the volume (I live in Queensland)? For example, would it be legal for me to institute a monetary fine for breach of the noise rule?

Hello Lifehacker – I have a question about trust.
Recently I became seriously ill. And while I was unable to handle anything for myself, my wife took on a massive amount of responsibility and also found out that I was sometimes fast and loose with my finances (nothing serious like problem gambling, but enough). In my incapacitation, my wife found that she couldn’t rely on me and trust me the way she had in the past.
I survived my near death experience (hospital infection, intubation, the whole nine yards) but have been so severely weakened that I have had to leave work and pretty much retire to a life on disability until the bitter end. Sad but true. However, I’m not dead yet, in fact, I can manage (on my good days) a great deal – we recently moved and while I can’t move furniture, I can move some boxes and open/empty things as we go.
But my wife doesn’t trust my word anymore. She won’t accept that I can be 100% honest and therefore won’t trust my judgement when I say I can do certain tasks. So she stops me from doing some tasks, some involving our baby girl and some involving the house, and I see the pressure fall back on her. I try to demonstrate my strength when and where I can, but she won’t accept my judgement (and not all days are good days).
Any advice on how to win back someone’s trust? Is it just a matter of time? Can anything accelerate building back that bond?

Been stuck with my ultimate gaming setup for a while. Moving away from PC gaming on a monitor and having to switch setups for console gaming, I’ve made the move to integrating console gaming, PC gaming and general home entertainment into my living room.
Basically, all gaming gets done on the sofa, but I have never been able to nail down the best way to ensure comfort for long PC gaming sessions that isn’t bad for my posture and I am yet to find a solution for a level mouse space.
I was wondering if there is any sort of solutions for a sofa gamer aspiring to the ‘ultimate setup’ in the peripheral and general sense, kind of like the ultimate diy sofa gaming throne?

I loved Skyrim when it was released and over the past few years I’ve seen many screenshots of the game with extra mods enabled. I’m in my early 30’s and live a very happy and IMO fulfilling life.
I have an excellent job, a loving fiancée, no debt, some of the best friends anyone could want (that i’ve had most of my teenage/adult life) oh and a cat.
However im emotionally detached to most things due to what most people see as a horrific childhood.
I don’t have any attachment to my family which is apparently weird, im brutally honest in all aspects of my life, i don’t believe in lying or sugar coating things, and i don’t have any mental or psychological disorders.
I’ve seen doc’s, and shrinks and they all agree that im completely fine, some slight anger issues but that’s about it (liars and people who cant follow simple logic bother me).
So from the top so you get an idea
Drug addicted drunk emotionally and physically abusive father… a mother who while there physically was very emotionally detached herself due to childhood abuse.
most of my life was pretty shitty, but some highlights.
At age 8 I was forced by my father to put down my first pet (a dog) because he wasn’t a good guard dog (i was made to shoot him and then forced to watch while he bled out, and then made to bury him).
When i was 11 i watched my father bite a guys ear off and spit it in his face (the whole ear), the guy deserved it mind you, 6 months before that he had broken into our home and set everything we owned on fire and killed our dog.
At 12 I watched a friend of mine have his leg essentially blown off by a shotgun, by a crazy junkie.
For the early teen years of my life i had various things happen that most people never have.
I was ran down by people in cars, Stabbed, beaten and shot at on a daily basis (all by crazy junkies that lived near us)
I left home at 15 and pretty much raised myself
BUT given the things i’ve seen in my life, i worry that i should be more disturbed by my childhood, and then i worry that since im not that i have issues i cant see or that aren’t apparent.
my main question is… should i be worried that this stuff doesn’t bother me? and doesn’t seem to affect my life?
I don’t feel depressed or upset at my life, is that something that should worry me? or something i should be very happy about, that throughout all the crap in my life i turned out essentially great?

The project: I’ve a spare Raspberry Pi, and am considering putting it to use by integrating it with a car stereo. The head unit has a 3.5mm input which would allow the RPi to become an mp3 jukebox. Equipping it with bluetooth to allow pairing to a phone for handsfree conversing is of particular interest, with the aim to mount a microphone near or on the pillar so it’s close to the driver’s mouth. Add a touch screen is likely to be the best interface for it, and maybe a reverse camera later.
Question 1: What are the legal implications for a project like this, and are there some successful project pages you could point to for building your own?
Question 2: Is Python the best language to work with on the RPi, or are there decent alternatives for this project?

I am a few months into my third year of my current accounting role, which I have been working in since graduating uni, and I am now considering a change of career. I don’t have any serious financial obligations at the moment, so it feels like the ideal time to test the waters. Unfortunately, I don’t have a clear sense of direction of where to start, so I’m trying to inform myself and get an idea of what’s out there.
Something I have been thinking about is the future of the jobs market, and where I might find an industry that will be new and innovative (which probably suggests the tech industry), where there will be careers that probably don’t even exist now! (Or are at least beginning to develop.) For example, more than a few years ago, social media started to gather momentum and businesses started to adopt it as part of the marketing strategy. Seeing Facebook change from a website for socialising and networking, to what it is today, that’s pretty cool!
So what do you forecast will be the emerging industries in the future? What sort of an occupation do you think will be tied to that industry? I can’t imagine anything happening in the world of accounting anytime soon….

My driving makes my girlfriend sick and I find my driving just fine. I think that using her phone during the car ride contributes more to her sickness than my driving. Is there a way that we can work this out, backed by some research? I’m sure many couples out there have a similar issue.

I’ve run in to something of a perpetual dilemma. My wrists have been experiencing some pain, so I went to see a doctor. He confirmed that it was the onset of carpal tunnel. His suggestion was that I should take it easy from the computer lifestyle. At 20, I had to retort. I asked him if there was an alternative. After all, I need my keyboard for study and work (and a lil’ gaming).
So my question is this: what cheap tools or hacks are there for the average wrist-pain sufferer where the keyboard/mouse is concerned? Are makeshift supports (old sock under the wrist) and posture considerations also effective?
Fruit flies in my house… its winter… how do I eradicate them? They are winning, please help! (Also send M:TG cards!)

Having frequented both Lifehacker and Kotaku for several years now, I have seen many Competitions/Giveaways and while “You have to be in it to win it.” I have always wondered what the chances of winning are and whether there is roughly the same amount of entries each time. While the prospect of wading through pages of statistics and probability would make for an interesting afternoon I digress.

Lots of people read LH tips but any idea how many try to adopt them? If so which ones have been the most successful in terms of making someones life/work/play better?
My question is about morals in games. Should games, especially board and card games, be used to raise questions of a moral nature. For example, slavery. Or why are so many games based on war, killing, & conquering, when most people do not hold those values in their daily life and are justifiably upset by those things? Thanks – Sye

I think it is safe to say that everyone is interested in their future savings. It is easy to say “invest your money” but the common person does not know how. It would be great to get some information that everyone can use. The early people know the earlier they can start. People also think that a large sum on money is needed but that is also not true. What are some guidelines and myths about investing and what would be a good way/time for everyone to start?
I seem to have a very unique issue and cannot find the answer anywhere on the Internet. I bought my wife a MacBook Pro earlier this year. It is the lowest end 13″ one, and it came with a 500GB hard drive and the DVD superdrive. I successfully replaced the 500GB hard drive with a 1TB hard drive and moved the 500GB hard drive that came with the computer to the DVD drive slot using an adapter that I got from Other World Computing. My plan was to install Windows 7 to that drive via Boot Camp so my wife would have a dual boot system. Well, I was able to install Windows to that drive, but I cannot boot into Windows unless the OS X drive is disconnected. How can I make it so both drives will show up as bootable without having to open the computer and disconnect one of them?

I recently have been experiencing some personal turmoil, and find myself at a crossroads in life. Recently completing a Bachelor of Commerce, I have not successfully done any internships or vacationer positions. Currently, I am looking for a new position in Accounting or Finance, but am not as such successful. I have tried networking, with limited success.
Now, onto my question. After the completion of my degree, I do not know if this is what I want to do, however it is far too late to throw it all away now. I am competent in my area, have some interest in it, but whenever I read/watch something like ‘The Little Prince’ or ‘Saving Mr Banks’ which reminds me of my past, failed dreams to become an author, I always tear up a bit thinking about it. Lifehacker, what should I do?

I’ve used to be an avid magic player but haven’t played much in the past few years, so this prize caught my attention. I have a few questions that may be of interest to you and your readship:
Firstly, I have a 6 year son who loves to play board and card games. I have a few already that he loves to play, but would like to see a list of the best modern family games and activities to play with kids under 10, that will get them away from TV and electronic screens for awhile.
Second question, I am interested in looking into electric cars, but would be interested in seeing a review of the different options available, and a cost benefit analysis into what circumstances are best suited to the current generation of electric, hybrid, and petrol cars from a pure economic point of view.
Finally, as a tabletop RPG gamer I am very interested in the potential of using 3D printers to print my own miniatures, but would be interested in seeing what kind of support already exists out there to facilitate this. What 3D printers are currently available at what price points, and which would be best suited to printing plastic minis? What size minis would they support printing, just the small “medium” creatures, or could they support huge or even gargantuan sized monsters? How would I go about getting or designing the different patterns? And how would the price of purchasing the printer and the printing materials compare to the cost of buying the premade minis?

My Daughter who is 3 has started lieing, and not just about little things but almost about everything and will often break into tears if you catch her out in a lie, and as she is lieing almost constantly about very obvious things you can imagine this becomes a bit of a problem.
What is a good tip or advise for teaching her to either not lie, or to try and get her to be less of a breakdown of snot and tears everytime i catch her out.

I am in the midst of planning a cultural wedding for me and my “soon to be fiance”. How can I best manage the expectations/demands of my family (and extended) family and still maintain control over planning the wedding.
It seems every time the subject is brought up, the parents dominate the conversation with how they want/plan/intend to have the wedding pan out. On one hand I still want to keep their cultural expectations in mind when planning, but I do also want to ensure it’s a day about me and my bride.

My parents are divorced. Every year at Christmas they bicker over who had us last Christmas, who has the right to us this Christmas, how the other one always get’s their way. It makes it one of the worst times of the year.
Do you have any suggestions for how I can sort it all out? My current solution is to just say screw it and stay at home.
I gave an elderly family member who has been losing her sight for a few years an audiobook for Christmas. Surprisingly she never knew audiobooks were a thing! I’ve been researching the best way for her to access audiobooks and what software/hardware to use but am very confused.

Hi lifehacker, I want to make a music system that works througout my home that I can control with my iPhone. At the moment I’m using squeezebox, which is pretty good, but I understand it’s not supported any more.
I use old android phones and tablets running a squeezeplayer app plugged into various amps and speakers around the house.

My question is the controversy surrounding modern religion as it plays a dominant role in our thoughts, actions, and daily lives as it pertains to events in the world around us. My question is what if said approach to religion is wrong, that collaboration not confrontation is needed to make the truth about who we r as a species and what our purpose is in life seem evident. How would I know which religion is right? Or should I be a part of all religions? Lifehacker do u have any advice for my personal philosophical dilemma I’m currently facing?
Im 26 in this coming March and have never had a girlfriend. I have been seeing a girl for about 3 months and things are going ridiculously good. We’re both a little odd and I’ve not had this kind of connection/relationship with another girl. The only thing is this; We’re both going overseas soon and won’t see each other for 2 months. A week after we get back, we both go in to full-time study/part time work and will live about an hour away from each other. I don’t know what to do. What should I do?
