The Lifehacker Awards 2014 nominations continue. This morning, we’re curious: with an always-contentious question: which media player software do you rely on?
Maybe you’re a longtime stan for VLC. Maybe you’re happy with iTunes or Windows Media Player. Maybe you only listen to music on your phone. Maybe you depend on a full-blown media centre package. Tell us who should be on our shortlist in the comments.

I use foobar exclusively for music and VLC for video, nothing else. Can control/stream both of them from anywhere in the house.
Do we even need to nominate anything other than VLC?

Its got chromecast support, can play in a browsers using html5, apps for mobile devices, apps for consoles, and stream as a DLNA server.
You can also set it to steam outside of your home network and share with friends/family or on the go.
It was VLC before it became garbage, now it is Windows Media Player

Squeezebox (Logitech Media Server & squeezelite for windows emulated clients) for Music.
I’m all about centralising media, converters, and playback stats to my main machine.

I load my entire mp3 library into the sims, and any time I want to listen to music I create a new household in the sims and buy a music player, and then use the in-game controls to browse through my tunes
Still can’t go past Foobar for music. It’s not the easiest to use but it lets me organise things exactly how I want it.
I use Plex for video watching these days, though VLC for when I want to watch something that’s not hosted on my file server.

Audio: iTunes (but it’s not like you’ve got a choice if you have an iPad and/or iPod)
Surely it is Plex, I nothing else comes close to its flexibility at home, so many options!
Xbmc on my OUYA works flawlessly for me.
Zoom Player for stand alone watching ( managed all the plugins )
Media Browser for couch potato watching on the big screen
-1 for VLC since its interface is poop.

MPV is really kickass, I’ve been using it for years.
It was forked from mplayer2 (so it can play everything), is open source, and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux

One stop shop for me.
I run 1 master backend with a quad dvb-t tuner, with 3 frontends. Takes care of everything except my Blu-ray’s, prefer to use a dedicated higher end player for that.
