NOVA’s CyberSecurity Lab Shows How Tricky Data Security Really Is

Keeping data secure is no easy task, and no one knows that better than the engineers who work to secure applications, networks and databases every day. To get an idea how difficult it can be — and learn about security in the process, this NOVA Lab puts you in their shoes.

The Lab is part game and part instructional guide, explaining the difficult balancing act between keeping a network running, balancing resources to secure applications and services, and blocking attacks and rooting out human security problems. You’ll be challenged with tasks like brute forcing passwords while picking secure, random ones of your own, blocking attacks against your network designed to steal data, and dealing with internal problems at your fictional startup, such as a CEO who launched without telling you.

There are also basic social engineering challenges designed to help you learn — or understand — what social engineering attacks look like and how to tell them apart. You’ll also learn that there’s more to “hacking” and “hackers” than what you hear in the news, and how to judge the trustworthiness of your email and text messages. The guide even gets into the importance of encryption, and why you should embrace it. Hit the link below to read more, and give it a whirl.
