Improve Your Mechanical Keyboard With New Keycaps And Dampeners

Whether you want to give your keyboard a new look or a different feel, one of the biggest benefits to a mechanical keyboard is the ability to easily swap out your keycaps. Luke over at Linus Tech Tips shows us how.

Removing your keys may seem like a superficial change, but it offers a number of more practical advantages, such as:

  • Giving your keyboard a thorough cleaning (just be prepared for what lies underneath)
  • Changing the “feel” of your keys with different types of keycaps — PBT keycaps, for example, have a textured, shine-resistant coating that protects them from the oils on your hands
  • Adding different kinds of keyboard dampeners, which minimise the “clack” of your keyboard keys hitting the frame

Luke walks through the different kinds of keycaps and dampeners you may find, how to find ones compatible with your keyboard, and how to safely swap them out. If you’re a bit of a keyboard nut (like I am), it’s a great little how-to. Check out the video above for more.
