Give Each Day A Theme For Productive Momentum

Distractions can make you lose focus on the things you should be doing. To stay on task, use Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s method: Give each work day a “theme” so you always know what to focus on that day, and what to return to when you’re distracted.

Dorsey co-founded Twitter and Square. So when asked how he handles being the CEO of both companies at the same time, he shared this method, outlined in the video above. For example, the theme for Monday can be product development, so you arrange your meetings and to-do lists focused around the product. If a marketing problem comes up, either deal with it quickly if possible or postpone it to the day of the week marked for marketing.

Of course, Dorsey is the CEO, so he had the leeway to choose what he works on. You might not be able to push tasks around as easily. But you can still set soft themes. The point here is that you get to focus on one area, and in case you get derailed, you can get back on track quickly.

Dorsey has shared other valuable advice in the past, like a daily “do and don’t” list that acts as reminders to consciously make better choices.
