What To Say To The Barber To Get The Perfect Haircut

Getting the perfect haircut is surprisingly difficult, especially if you're trying out a new barber. The Art of Manliness guides you through the right lingo to use.

If you don't know the vocabulary, trying to tell the barber what you want is next to impossible. So, it's good to know what to tell your barber what you want in the right order. The process here is pretty simple:

  1. Tell the barber the general style you want
  2. Tell them exactly how much you want taken off
  3. Tell them if you want a taper or not
  4. Tell them the type of neckline you want
  5. Tell them if you want texture
  6. Tell them how you want your arches
  7. Tell them how you want your sideburns

A lot of these tips are for shorter men's cuts, but people with longer cuts and women's cuts can still take a few of the basics.

How to Talk to Your Barber [The Art of Manliness]

The thumbnail for this article had the bottom half of the word 'barber' cut off and I thought it said 'How to talk to your rapper'.

Getting what you need from a barber is pretty simple, as a man.
"Number two, all over." Job done. I guess you could replace it with 'number one' or 'shave it all off' if you liked. Anything else... what the hell are you, some kind of hippie?

Tell the barber the general style you want
Tell them exactly how much you want taken off
Tell them if you want a taper or not
Tell them the type of neckline you want
Tell them if you want texture
Tell them how you want your arches
Tell them how you want your sideburns

Assuming you had a clue what all of that is... I just walk in and tell the barber " the usual" and 20 minutes or so later walk out. Of course it helps that I've had the same hairstyle and barber for 25 years....

Next time when you get your perfect haircut, take a few pics and show it to them the next time you go to any hair dresser for a cut.
