Android/iOS: A good VPN is a must-have. We have some favourites to recommend, but finding a good phone-friendly VPN is another matter. TunnelBear, one of our favourite services to get around location-restrictions, just launched updated mobile apps that make mobile security and privacy a snap.
We’ve been testing the new TunnelBear VPN app on both Android and iPhone for a while now, and they both work beautifully. As long as you have a TunnelBear account, you can use the app to connect to any of TunnelBear’s servers around the globe, including the US, the UK, Australia, the Netherlands and Japan. Just swipe around the map to find the tunnel you want to connect to, or tap the country name at the bottom of the screen to bring up a list of options. Toggle the “Always On” option to make sure your connection is secure all the time — even as your phone goes to sleep and wakes up from it, or when you lock/unlock it.
If you’re trying to get around location blocks, the option to choose your exit server is invaluable. If you’re just trying to secure your activity because you’re on public Wi-Fi or another untrusted network, select “closest tunnel” to just get up and running quickly. TunnelBear is free for 500MB per month — 1.5GB if you tweet about TunnelBear — while pricing goes up to $5/month for unlimited data on all your devices.
Once you’re connected, all of your phone’s traffic is encrypted as it passed through TunnelBear’s VPN. TunnelBear doesn’t log, monitor or store any information about applications, services or websites users visit or use while they’re connected. Hit the link below to give it a try.
