Ask LH: Why Does My Spotify Premium Still Feature Ads?

Hey Lifehacker, I'm a Spotify Premium user, so why do I get advertisement notifications on my phone, even when I'm not using the app? Is Spotify Premium even allowed to do this given I pay for the premium "no ads" service? Thanks, Out Out Damned Spotify

Dear OODS,

It sounds like you're mistaking one type of ad for another. Spotify Premium's "no ads" incentive actually refers to audio ads in your music stream, whereas you're talking about Spotify promotions sent via email. Fortunately, there's a solution to this too.

To disable notifications emails, log into your account and scroll down to "Email notifications". From here, you can adjust how often you receive notifications for a range of options including playlist updates, friend activity, song recommendations and new album releases. If you want to eradicate the lot, simply click "Never" for every option. Sorted!

Cheers Lifehacker

It sounds like LH may have mistaken what you claim to be 'ads'.
I'm guessing you'd have stated that they're coming through as emails if that were the case.

I can confirm, as a premium user myself, that I do not see a single ad whether in the app or not. It sounds like it may be incorrectly sending you ads. Try removing the app and reinstalling it, and also double checking that you're on the new app not the original one.

Here's the links to the app:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.music&hl=en

    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/spotify-music/id324684580?mt=8

If all else fails, try contacting their support team. You definitely shouldn't be receiving ads.
