Ask LH: Why Doesn’t Chrome Show Search History Snippets Anymore?

Hey Lifehacker, On my Chrome browsing history it used to show a small extended snippet of some content from the page that was visited underneath the title of the page in the history list. That has since stopped happening and I’d like to get it back. However, I don’t know what it was called and don’t know why it was occurring in the first place! Any advice? Thanks, Chrome Confused

Hi CC,

Google likes conducting “experiments”, where a small percentage of users see a different version of its sites or tools. It sounds like you were included in an “experiment” to test out offering more detailed snippets with history for some signed-in Chrome users. Unfortunately, once that option gets switched off and the experiment ends, there’s not much you can do to regain it, other than cross your fingers and hope the Chrome might decide to make it a permanent feature.

Showing snippets with history seems like an obvious area for someone to develop a Chrome extension. However, while we’ve encountered several extensions in this area (including Better History and CottonTracks), we haven’t seen one specifically designed for this feature. If any readers have encountered one, let us know in the comments!

Cheers
