MagicPlan is a design app for Android and iOS that lets you create 3D floorplans with your phone. Whether you work in real estate, are in the process of renovating your house or just want to measure your bedroom, this app is a great time-saving solution with a slick interface to boot.
Measuring the rooms in your house can be an arduous undertaking, especially if you have furniture and bric-à-brac flush against the walls. Instead of lugging your lounges and cupboards about with a tape measure in tow, you might want to give MagicPlan a try.
Using your phone's camera and GPS, the app will accurately measure your rooms and then generate a floor plan which can be viewed in 3D. Creating an accurate floor-plan involves taking photos of each corner of a room, adding the doors/windows and then stitching it to the others via a drag-and-drop interface. It's initially a bit hard to get to grips with, but the app does come with a series of inbuilt video tutorials to guide you through the process.
The video below provides a decent rundown of how it all works:
You can export the results as a PDF, JPG or DXF file. Although the app is free to install, you'll need to pay $19.99 per month if you want to export an unlimited number of plans in all file formats. That said, if you're happy to stick with PDF/JPG and can live with visible watermarks, you can continue to use the app for free.
Interestingly, there's also a CSI version available that has been specifically designed for crime scene sketching. One of the advantages touted by the company is that "there's no need to write a report." Hmm.
