IT being moved offshore is not a new phenomenon, but it has gained extra headwind with the emergence of freelance exchanges which enable smaller companies to take advantage of cheaper overseas workers. Which countries attract the most money from Australian employers?

Business Insider quotes data from freelance work sharing site oDesk on where its Australian clients are spending their money. These are the top nine (Australia itself just squeezes in):

  1. Philippines
  2. India
  3. United States
  4. Ukraine
  5. Pakistan
  6. Russia
  7. Bangladesh
  8. China
  9. Australia

Since this is only sourced from one employer, we can’t necessarily assume it represents the overall market. Nonetheless, it’s a reminder if you’re working as a contractor that you are competing in a global marketplace.
