Chrome: YouTube Pause allows you to solve one of the worst first-world problems around: figuring out which YouTube tab you need to pause. This extension just gives you one button that silences them all.
This extension is handy if you often find yourself watching multiple videos or lots of open tabs. We discovered this while searching for a Chrome alternative to YouTube Smart Pause, a Firefox extension that automatically pauses YouTube if you switch to another tab. While the majority of people seem to prefer Chrome over Firefox, it looks like there’s something for everyone!

Nice, thanks for the find. Giving it a go now.
Another solution to this issue (that I currently use) is:
YouTweak for YouTube: Has many useful tweaks including a setting where YT tabs will continue to pre-load the video, but auto-pause they player.

Flash Block: This venerable extension does exactly what it says on the tin. And is useful across the whole web experience. And you can white-list sites, or domains where you DO want to always-allow Flash to just start doing it’s thing without your click-of-approval.

Does this work for embedded video also?
