Renting an apartment instead of a hotel room when you’re on holidays might seem like an extravagance, but it’s not as crazy as you might think. As The Kitchn points out, an apartment can often save you money and provide a better experience if you plan it right.
The idea here is to rent an apartment through a service like Stayz or HomeAway. In some cases, this can save you money compared to renting a hotel room, but an apartment also just gives you more space, which is ideal if you’re on a longer trip. You just need to keep three things in mind when looking for the right apartment:
- Apartments are best for five days or more.
- Apartments are best in busy, interesting neighbourhoods.
- Start early, spend a lot of time looking, and then trust your gut.
Apartments aren’t going to work for every trip, but it’s a worthwhile trick to add into your budget holiday tool belt. Plus, you get a full kitchen, so you can actually make yourself food once in a while. Head over to The Kitchn for all the details.

I’ve had some amazing apartment deals in places like Prague and Riga. They were substantially cheaper than hotel rooms, and while not necessarily in “busy, interesting neighbourhoods”, had good access via public transport to such places.
Some of the extra benefits were a laundry and parking. The owners also provided information packs that were much more useful and interesting than anything I’ve found in a hotel room.
