Flat design is “in” right now apparently, but it’s actually old as, well, design. Lifehacker reader Envirominimalist takes us back to a time when drop shadows and curved, bubbled edges weren’t all that with this custom desktop on his Lubuntu system.
It’s all brown, all the time, but it still stands out, keeps his to-do list front and centre, and offers plenty of room to work without distraction. Even the view with windows open (as you’ll see below) fits the theme. In the meantime, if you want the same look for your linux system, here’s what you’ll need:
- The wallpaper from Simple Desktops
- The AwOken GNOME theme for the icons (below)
- The Ethe Openbox theme for the to-do widget and the window borders (below)
- Conky, a lightweight system monitor for Linux systems
- The Conky script available at Envirominimalist’s Kinja blog
That’s all there is to it! Since Envirominimalist is running Lubuntu, he also offers some more tips to get it looking just right, like what to do with the Lubuntu panel so it’s not a distraction. You can see another shot of his desktop with a window open and icons shown below:
