Android (4.0+): Finding new podcasts to enjoy can be tricky. That’s where Player FM comes in: The app guides you to smart, interesting podcasts based on category, channel or specific topics.
Player FM is focused almost entirely on podcast discovery, helping you find new podcasts to subscribe to based on your interests and the topics you already like. When we say topic, we don’t mean “technology” or “music”; we mean specifics, such as “Iron Man 3” for podcasts talking about the upcoming movie, or “next generation consoles” for podcasts speculating about the next Xbox and the already-announced PS4.
Like any good podcast app, the service saves your subscriptions in the cloud so you can get them on other devices, gives you the option to stream podcasts from the web or download them and listen to them locally, and lets you choose whether to download at any time or only over Wi-Fi (which is important, since the reviews at Google Play indicate it’s a bit of a data hog). The app features show notes and links for each episode, as well as a homescreen and lock screen widget.
The app is in beta right now, so it’s missing a few features such as manual deletion of downloaded podcasts — right now they delete themselves on a schedule). It’s not as powerful as our favourite podcast manager for Android, DoggCatcher. Even so, if you love your podcasts and want to try some new similar ones, Player FM is worth a look.
