How Much Temperature Actually Matters When Brewing Coffee

Brewing coffee at home has many precise requirements. You’ll need to get a good grind, let the coffee brew for the correct amount of time, and get the water temperature right. The folks over Verve Coffee did a few tests to see just how much temperature matters.

Coffee requires water at near-boiling point. Thankfully, Verve Coffee’s tests show that for the most part, you’re going to get a delicious cup of coffee as long as your water is within a reasonable approximation of the right temperature:

If you bring your water up to a boil and use it in a reasonable amount of time you’re going to have awesome coffee. The difference between taking it right off the boil and 30 seconds later is negligible… Water temperature definitely affects coffee extraction, but from a practical standpoint from a home user, most people spend way too much time thinking about it.

If you’re the type to mess around every morning getting that water temperature perfect, it might be worth backing off a bit and spending more time on what really matters: drinking some tasty coffee.
