According to a recent post at Gartner, environmental sustainability is a key indicator of corporate performance. However, there’s a problem: there’s no standard way of measuring indicators in a consistent and universally accepted way. The good news is that the market is developing and delivering the tools needed for measurement.
Measuring and managing data centre energy use is a complex business. Gartner has developed their own framework that uses “information and data based analytics in order to obtain a comprehensive DC footprint analysis that identifies sustainability as a core element”.
Every business I’ve worked with over the last few years has put environmental issues high up the corporate strategy but the efforts have always seemed unfocused. Although Gartner’s model is directed at data centres it might help integrate the efforts of other business functions.
