Turn On Facebook Chat For Only The Few People That Matter

Facebook Chat causes more annoyances than it solves, but if you use it to talk to the occasional friend, there’s a lesser-known setting that lets you appear offline to everyone except a few of your close friends. Here’s how it works.

Facebook Chat isn’t exactly the best instant messaging service out there, but it might be the only one your friends use — or maybe you want it turned on for it’s solid video chat offerings. Whatever the case may be, here’s how to appear offline to the friends you don’t want to contact:

  1. Open up your Facebook chat list and click the gear icon. Go to “Advanced Settings”.
  2. Choose “Turn On Chat for Only Some Friends” and type in the name of the friends you want to whitelist. Alternatively, you can turn chat on for everyone and block just a few people.
  3. Click Save.

When you’re done, you’ll appear offline to everyone except the friends you’ve whitelisted, which is pretty handy for keeping everyone else at bay. Hit the link for six other handy Facebook tips.
