How To Stop Facebook’s New Notification Sounds

Facebook recently started rolling out a new “feature” that plays a sound every time you receive a notification. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to turn it off.

Facebook Chat already makes a sound whenever you receive a message, but this feature makes a sound when you receive any notification. Here’s how to turn that feature off:

  1. Click on the gear in the upper left-hand corner and go to Account Settings > Notifications. Alternatively, you can click here to go there directly.
  2. Under “How You Get Notifications,” click the “View” link next to “On Facebook.”
  3. Uncheck the box that says “Play a Sound When Each New Notification Is Received.” Then click “Save Changes.”

This has been rolling out since November, and not everyone has the feature yet. However, since this setting affects Facebook Chat’s notifications too, you should still be able to get into the settings and turn it off before it rolls out to you.
