Smartphone And Mobile Use In Australia Is Accelerating Rapidly

We’re fast approaching saturation level for smartphones in Australia, with takeup doubling over the last twelve months, and nearly one mobile subscription for every single person in the country.

The findings from the ACMA’s attractively named Report 3—Smartphones and tablets: Take-up and use in Australia state that in June 2011, roughly 25 per cent of the adult population of Australia had a smartphone. By June 2012 that figure had jumped to 49 per cent, meaning somewhere around 8.9 million Australians — undoubtedly more now — have a smartphone in their pocket.

You can’t have a useful smartphone without some kind of mobile data, and the figures suggest that in the twelve months to June 2012, there was a 22 per cent increase in mobile Internet subscribers to 22.1 million. That’s very nearly on parity with the current Australian population, but then it’s also got to take into account hotspots, tablets and mobile dongle users, as well as business accounts that may not always be active.

For those who like market share statistics, it’s unsurprisingly good news for Android and iOS, with a reported 58 and 36 per cent respectively, and less pleasant for Windows Phone and Blackberry, with 4 per cent and less than 1 per cent respectively. On the tablet side, it’s a virtual Apple landslide, with 77 per cent of the local market; the next closest competitor is stated as Samsung with 7 per cent.
