Briefly: Chrome Adds Speech Recognition, Virgin Mobile Ice Cream Charity

Brief news items of note for Lifehacker readers, including Chrome's new speech recognition on desktops, Virgin Mobile's unusual charity initiative and discounted Amaysim recharges.

  • The latest beta of Google Chrome includes a basic speech recognition API. When this will get really interesting is when extension developers take advantage of it.
  • Virgin Mobile's latest publicity stunt is a campaign where customers can nominate a favourite organisation to receive a fundraising visit from the Ice Dream Van: it shows up with ice creams, people make a gold coin donation and score an ice cream, and the organisation gets the funds. More details here.
  • Amaysim customers: get 20 per cent off recharges at Coles this week (via OzBargain)
  • A recent update intended for Windows clients was accidentally distributed to server systems via Windows Update as well. This can cause problems on servers used to store root certificates. More information and a fix at the Microsoft SUS Blog.
