We tell our phones and computers to remind us of specific events and tasks in the future, but those aren't the only reminders you should be using. Here are four you ought to add that will aid your productivity, make you feel better when you're down and keep you from forgetting cool places you enjoy.

- Not to indulge in a bad habit — When trying to break a bad habit, it's easy enough to indulge in a moment of weakness. Combat that by reminding yourself not to at the right time. For example, if you're trying to eat healthier, set reminders for when you generally eat meals that simply tell you you're working on eating healthier (and why, too, for a little extra motivation).
- Good things about yourself — Some days can suck, but even when they don't, a compliment can't hurt. Pick a few days at random each month to schedule a compliment. This may seem kind of dumb, but if you remind yourself of a specific thing that you did that made you happy and proud of yourself, suddenly hearing about it when you don't expect it can keep you feeling better when you might be down.
- Places you really enjoyed — Perhaps you just tried a new restaurant and loved it, or discovered a cool store in another neighbourhood. You assume you'll remember it because you liked it, but it's easy to forget about a place that's not necessarily in your usual stomping grounds. Set a location based reminder before you leave so next time you're near by your smartphone will notice and let you know.
- Contextual information about a place — Let's say you're on holidays and you're visiting a landmark, theme park, restaurant or whatever else. You may want to keep some useful information handy. You could create a giant document with links and other contextual information about the location, or you could schedule it as a location-based reminder so that info shows up automatically when you arrive.
Reminders don't have to be about specific events or tasks. You can use them to provide you with useful information at the right times. Schedule some unusual ones and put them to better use.
