2012 Lifehacker Awards: Best Domestic Airline

The voting is over and it’s time to check out the winners! First category in the 2012 Lifehacker Awards is Best Domestic Airline. Who took home the readers’ choice and editor’s choice awards?

Readers’ Choice: Virgin Australia

It was a tight battle but Virgin Australia took out the reader vote as Australia’s best airline. The airline had a busy year, expanding its mobile boarding pass scheme and taking a stake in rivals Tiger and Skywest in late October. Less pleasingly for passengers, it also increased its baggage charges.

Editor’s Pick: Qantas

Qantas-bashing is a national sport, but the airline ran extremely close to Virgin Australia in our poll. Brand heritage aside, Qantas’ full-service offering (no basic baggage charges and food on all flights) clearly still appeals to passengers more than the bargain-priced rivals. 2013 will be an interesting year for the airline; assuming its Emirates deal gets the ACCC seal of approval, the international flying experience with Qantas will undergo some fairly dramatic changes. What it won’t include, apparently, is in-flight Wi-Fi.

Stay tuned throughout the week; we’ll announce a new category winner each day.
