DIY Email Light Notifies You Of New Messages From Afar

You may have put together a unified notification system on your computer, but it doesn’t do a good job of notifying you when you’re away. Over at the Wired How-To Wiki, they’ve built an LED notifier that shines when you have new email — specifically, email related to new job openings when you’re on the hunt.

You can adapt this project to notify you of any email you want, but Wired takes you through the step-by-step process for job hunting. It uses a service that sends RSS entries from Monster to a Gmail address, then uses an Arduino to illuminate an LED by your computer. What’s nice is that even if you were away when the notification came in, you’ll see the light flashing when you return, so you know it’s time to get back to the job search.
