8 Million Australians On The Do Not Call Register

We’re noting this a little belatedly, but it’s still worth mentioning: more than 8 million Australians are now on the Do Not Call register. Memo to marketers: if the only way you think you can sell a product if by hassling people over the phone, you are wrong. Two-thirds of Australian households don’t want to hear from you.

At the beginning of June, that number stood at 7.5 million. As well as signing up for the register, consider getting a Do Not Knock sign to keep door-to-door salespeople (almost inevitably shilling dubious power company deals) from hassling you.



    • if you get calls from overseas call centres promoting Australian suppliers you can still put in a complaint and the Australian company will get fined for it. The more people start speaking out against the overseas call centres the more jobs we can bring back to Australia. Lets not forget that these types of roles are filled with otherwise unqualified Australians eg. single mums etc.

        • I’ve worked in the industry for years and tell me another profession that someone can walk in to with no formal qualifications and earn $80k+ per year based on their own natural abilities. Was giving an example hence the “eg” not “ie”. And I have worked with a lot of single mums that have made excellent money using their gift of the gab. Although it’s getting tougher and tougher with it being outsourced overseas.

        • Use your brain, the more people on the DNCR the less jobs there is as there’s less numbers to call. No matter if they ate in India or Australia. I believe companies that are making a profit even by using Australians but still choose to use offshore is wrong like the major players in their industries. But the little companies that can’t survive but only through offshore which increases staff in Australia anyway as certain things can not be done all overseas

  • Our home phone is on the DNC register and we still receive at least 10 calls a day from scammers. I refuse to even answer the phone before 7pm (and sometimes they even ring up until as late as 10pm).

    • I would be calling up your phone provider and ask for a formal investigation to take place, as 10 calls a day from scammers is 10 too many and you need to find out where these calls are really coming from so they can do something about it. If they don’t, TIO.

      • What on Earth is your telco or the TIO going to do? The very fact they are scammers mean the numbers change often. Other than implementing some sort of tech on the user side that drops calls from unknown numbers (I think there are some modern digital handsets that can do this) or changing numbers altogether and going silent there is sweet FA that the telco/TIO can actively do for you.
        BTW I get a lot of scam calls. I answer the phone every now and then to see who they are. The last one was an Indian sounding guy in a call centre who wanted to ask me about my Telstra bill. When I asked if he was trying to scam me as we aren’t with Telstra he just laughed and I hung up.

    • Unplug your phone. Change your phone number. Change to a VoIP service with an unlisted number. Disconnect your landline completely.

      There is no other realistic option.

      There is nothing that the telcos or anyone else can do to stop this. Once scammers have your number you are done.

  • Since the US caught those MS scammers in India, we don’t get any more unwanted calls… well I say unwanted and I really do feel for charities but they are getting nearly as bad as scammers now. I try to be as polite as possible and I know they are trying to get money for important causes but how many times do they think people are going to donate. Plus we get calls after 7:00pm from them all the time.

    • If you knew the commissons the marketing company that called you was getting you wouldnt feel rude. Very little of any money collected gets to the charity. 20% at best gets to them. Usually 10-13 %.

Two-thirds of Australian households don’t want to hear from you.” It just means that the two-thirds that would have otherwise been irate about the calls are wiped off before you start dialling so makes their jobs easier if you think about it.

    • Exactly. If this many people are on the DNC register and companies are still pumping money into cold calling as a sales lead, then it shows how successful it really is. It’s like spam email, it’s a small minority that respond/click-through, but that small minority is very profitable.

      A recent study showed during an advertising campaign for major firm. 80% of the customers they acquired was on the DNCR that requested to be called.
      Do your research before you submit wrong facts. People usually on the DNCR are a cause of been bombarded by offshore calls not within Australia. ACMA should make the laws different for offshore centres compare to Australian run call centres.

  • I just wish that the DNC registrar could be extended to include companies that you have dealings with. My mobile is with Optus and I keep getting calls from them telling me I’ve won a new mobile phone (to replace my 3 month old Galaxy Nexus, apparently?). Legally they can do that under the DNC laws.

    • Add them to your phone contacts, then don’t pick up the phone. I did that with CBA’s life insurance people and they stopped trying.

      Also suggest that you tell them you aren’t interested in upgrading and ask for them to take you off their list. Keep complaining and poking holes in their arguments and getting escalated and you might get some sweet cashback out of it.

      Next suggestion is to change to amaysim, who only contact me when the next month starts. It’s a beautiful relationship we have.

  • Just a note to be careful of scammer calls.

    Some motherf _ _ker Indian called saying he was from the ATO and he had a $800 or so tax refund for me, he was asking for my bank details and asked me to confirm my TFN and details.

    Not being racist, I was pretty sure the ATO wouldn’t employ someone with a very thick accent that even I couldn’t understand (I’m from an asian family, but I also have a lot of fresh immigrant European friends as well), plus I hadn’t lodged my tax return yet.

    So being pretty savvy with these types of calls, I double backed on him and asked what was his name, level in the ATO, and employee number. He then got aggressive and said “don’t you want me to process your tax return”. Being a smart arse I said, “if you were from the ATO you can see I’m a multi millionaire (I’m not) and I don’t care about your piddly $800”.

    He hung up on me. But just in case, I double checked with my Business Accountant, and they said I didn’t have any refunds outstanding.

  • If you tell someone not to call and they continue to call you can say anything you want without legal hassles. Absolutely anything. My fav game is making them hang up on me. I get some awesome dummy spits from the indian call centres. They lose their shit after about 1 min. If Australian companys uses an indian centre i abuse them and tell them i think they are a scammer. I now only recieve calls from Telstra aus instead of their indian centre due to my hard work at keeping jobs local. Refuse to deal with overseas staff. Its the only way to fix the problem.
