What Are Your Top Spring Holiday Choices?

Spring has arrived. Not only is it a fine time to start cleaning, the improving weather makes it much more appealing to start planning a holiday. But where should you go?Picture by Mike Hauser

For a Ten Breakfast segment this morning, I’ve picked out three domestic destinations that are particularly appealing in spring:

  • The obvious choice for taking in spring blooms is Floriade in Canberra, which runs from September 15 to October 14 and offers four hectares of carefully-cultivated flowers. Canberra also has plenty of other attractions (start with the War Memorial and the National Library) and the weather is no longer achingly cold.
  • For a different take on spring growth that’s great as a family option, the Tangled Maze in Creswick in the Daylesford Macedon ranges is a good centrepiece for a weekend away. Plenty of B&Bs in the area if you fancy a romantic weekend away too.
  • Ayers Rock is a classic Australian destination. Recent room renovations at the Sails in The Desert mean you can enjoy a little luxury, and as well as the rock itself there’s the Outback Sky Journeys guided astronomical tour.

In researching those options, I also noticed something else: a very large number of hotels offer spring discounts for weekend stays. If you have a destination in mind, it’s worth ringing and checking if there are deals on offer. (These options often won’t show up through online booking sites, though researching through those first will give you a good idea of whether the discount is actually worth pursuing.)

So that’s my take, but it’s a big country out there. What are your favourite spring destinations? Tell us in the comments.
