New iOS YouTube App Offers Voice Search And New Sharing Options

iOS: The new YouTube app for the iPhone and iPod Touch lets you search by voice and features an overhauled UI that makes browsing playlists and favourites easier.

We’ve known that Google was planning to launch its own iOS app since ever since Apple said it would ditch the bundled version of YouTube in iOS 6, bit the new YouTube app is more than just a stand-alone version of the previous iOS version. In addition to the sharing features, the new app has a good-looking channel guide full of recommended channels and videos based on the ones you’ve watched and liked. The design is similar to the Google+ app, with a slide-out sidebar that provides quick access to settings and playlists.

Sharing in the new app is easier as well: one tap brings up options to share a video on Google+, Twitter and Facebook, and more. The news isn’t all good though: the new YouTube app is optimised for smaller iPhone and iPod Touch screens only right now, though an iPad version will be available “in the coming months,” according to Google.

More pressingly, while the new YouTube app lets you consume video, there’s no way to record or upload your own video, a feature that’s sorely missing. Despite that, the new app is worth a download, if for no other reason than that the old one is going away.
