From The Tips Box: Tablet Hangers, Launchpad Searching, Outlook Syncing

Readers offer their best tips for keeping your tablet easily accessible, using Launchpad on OS X, and syncing your Outlook account with Exchange.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favourites. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments or send it using the contact tab on the right.

Make an iPad Stand Out of a Coat Hanger

Matt creates a simple, cheap stand for his tablet:

I got annoyed with always having to balance my ipad on something, so I turned a coathanger into an ipad-hanger. You can dangle it off anything, you can make it with your bare hands, and it costs 30c. It’s pretty useful for anything you have to stand up for (like cooking), or when you just don’t have free desk space. You can check out this post on my blog for more info and pictures.

Just Start Typing to Search for Apps in Launchpad

Penn discovers a handy little shortcut in OS X:

I know most people probably don’t use Launchpad in OS X (I didn’t), but I just discovered a cool little feature. When you bring up launchpad, just start typing the name of the app and the search bar at the top will start filtering your list. It’s actually very similar to Windows 7’s Start menu, or Windows 8’s upcoming Start screen.

If you want a quick way to launch apps, Quicksilver is much more powerful, but this tip is still pretty handy.

Sync Outlook Mail, Contacts and Calendar to Your Phone

Chris Portela figures out how to use Outlook.com with Exchange-compatible devices and apps:

If you use Outlook, Hotmail, or Windows Live Mail, you can sync it to your iPhone (or programs like Outlook on the desktop) using Exchange ActiveSync. It will sync not only email, but things like contacts, calendars, and tasks. To do it, just set up a new Exchange account with:

  • Server: m.hotmail.com (even if you have an Outlook email address)
  • Username and email address: [email protected] (or @hotmail.com, or @live.com)
  • Password: your password

Bend the Toilet Paper Tube to Avoid Quick Unravelling

John Kaplan saves his bathroom from toilet paper messes:

If you want to prevent toilet paper rolls from unrolling too fast, squeeze the roll and give it an oval shape and next time it won’t unroll that fast even you pull it fast.
