Nitrous Significantly Speeds Up Web Browsing On The iPhone

iOS (Jailbroken): Running a third-party browser on the iPhone tends to be slower because Apple blocks third-party apps from using its Nitro Javascript Engine. Nitrous is a new jailbreak tweak that adds that functionality into any app you want.

With Nitrous installed, any app that accesses the internet can get access to the Nitro Javascript Engine through the Settings page. This includes all your browsers, like Chrome, but also any other app that uses a webkit browser, like Facebook or Twitter. We ran a few tests with V8 Benchmark Suite, and Nitrous does indeed give Chrome a hefty speed boost:

  • Chrome without Nitrous Score: 96
  • Chrome with Nitrous Score: 347
  • Safari Score: 360

The tweak doesn’t make Chrome quite as fast as Safari, but it’s close enough to make us happy. If you want a more comprehensive speed breakdown, head over to iDownloadBlog. Nitrous is a 99¢ download in the Big Boss Repository.
