What Are Your Biggest Facebook Problems?

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with Facebook, and it's for a good reason. The social network offers a number of benefits, but it's certainly not without its annoying problems. We want to know what's troubling you about Facebook so we can help you solve those issues.

Starting this week, we want to offer up advice on how to fix what you don't like about Facebook. It could be an annoying feature you don't know how to turn off, or a privacy problem you can't seem to resolve — just let us know in the comments. We'll be posting answers to some of the more common issues you're dealing with so they aren't issues anymore.

Comments

    1. Friends of friends who have all their comments set to other than just Friends, and which thus leak through to my wall. Despite a couple of campaigns from sympathetic friends to get them to restrict their settings, this has had little effect.
    2. Friends who use the wall to communicate with each other, so every one of their shared friends sees every trivial exchange they make.
    3. Groups: people sharing photos from their existing Facebook albums forget to make the photos Public so the group can see them. I administer a large group and have to clean up dozens of blank posts every day. Really the problem here is with Facebook's settings which should automatically open up
shared images to the group's members
    4. Groups: videos posted to the group wall don't automatically become visible. They turn up in the group's album, but then have to be re-shared to the group to become visible on the wall. This bug was reported to Facebook last year.
    5.

Can't say I've noticed #1 before personally. Perhaps I have friends that are all good at Facebook, but that seems a little unlikely.

It would be nice to have custom settings for photos I'm tagged with. It does sound like it could be messy, and I suppose the setting that sends a request to approve photos you're tagged with is there for a reason. I'm sure there has to be an easier way.

Not being able to change the properties of friends/lists in bulk. You have to go through all your friends individually to change their individual settings regardless of them being in a list. Unless they are in the 'restricted' list. You can't just add the to a list and set the whole list to only important updatdes unless they are on a list that overrides that policy.

The fbpurity extension has solved a lot of my annoyances, cutting out ads and restricting (filtering) the crap I don't want to see. What really bugs me is when people click on apps (let's say a horoscope app) without realising that they are giving the app permission to spam all of their friends. I only see this on mobile though, as fbpurity does a wonderful job.

    5. Intrusive friend suggestions on mobile app. I added a friend's partner as a friend and now FB is relentlessly working its way through all their common friends as suggestions for me.

    6. Can't turn off Bandsintown spam as it's posted on behalf of each artist rather than as a blockable

Sorry for dupes above. I only clicked submit once!

The mobile app is kinda dodgy always having wierd loading problems, wrong display pics for contacts, images glitch when loading and so on

This comment has been deemed inappropriate and has been deleted.

The fact it just doesn't work consistently. If it was anything other than Facebook nobody would use it with so many bugs.
I have contacted them uncountable times about how not every post shows up in my news feed even with subscriptions settings on full. Not one reply from support.

And I am just waiting for spam companies to start using the 'post updates via email' to post adverts as us.

Setting my newsfeed to sort by 'most recent' only sticks for a day or so on the website before reverting to 'top news' or whatever the other setting is called. The android app doesn't stick at all. I set it to 'most recent', then exit the app, back in, it's back to 'top news'.

Also, as raised by someone else above, the annoying 'people you may know' at the top of the feed in the android app. I see the person, decide I don't know them, and then....no way to get rid of it. it just stays there.

This drives me insane as well.

Yes, the "top news" thing for me too!

Also when I remove my name (tagged by someone else) from a photo yet still receive all the comments about it.

+100 Why in the world Facebook knows better what is a top story for me?!
And Facebook for Android is simply the worst application ever created, every interaction with it is annoying.

I am so over getting all the random pictures that my friends 'like' popping up in my newsfeed. It seems to now be full of annoying meme posts 'likes'

Also how FB is no longer running like an effective RSS Feed as apparently it picks and chooses which posts you see anyway.

The fact of Facebook bugs me at a background level. It's useful but my use of it is a tiny percentage of the things going on. Still, same is true of Microsoft Word, I guess.

Anyway, the current bugbear for me is that I can't filter the news feed so that I can see only updates from 'friends' or only updates from pages I've 'liked' (subscriptions). I've created my own 'Pages' list but I have to un-notify (or whatever) each page separately to remove them from the default feed. Surely, the whole idea of pages is different to friends and these days with everyone ruthlessly executing their FB marketing strategy it would be beneficial for all to be able to toggle readily between the two. (I'm imagining tabs at the top of the News Feed, but who am I to do screen design for probably the most used application on the planet.)

For a few weeks now the Facebook app on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 hasn't been stretching to use the full landscape page. But all the picture posts in the news feed are scaled for landscape. Re-installing the app didn't fix it and not all of the app's sections suffer from this problem. Chat and messages are fine, but news

P.S. the mobile version of the site is hard to comment on with Firefox on the Galaxy Tab.

As I was saying, the news feed and comment pages for particular items are not stretching to the width of the screen, but the pictures in the feed are sized to fit landscape and then cropped to the smaller width screen. Other sections of the app like massages and chat are not affected by this formatting problem.

I was using Facebook when it changed, I refreshed my news feed and the width changed. It has remained in this squashed format ever since. I have removed the app and re-installed it and there has even been an update sent through that didn't sort the problem. The "stretch/zoom" control is definitely set to stretch.

    8. When you're notified of a comment on a group post, the iPhone app takes you to the group but not to the specific post being commented on.

I don't want to see what my friends like and comment on.

I'd also really like to opt out of the map of places I've been checked into. In fact, check ins!

To summarise then. Its intrusive, annoying, buggy, and generally gets in your face. Pun intended. There are clearly many issues with privacy, and being unable to control the degree to which it pushes notifications and every activity your friends' make at you. There are issues with support, too and problems with mobile apps not working well.

The message I'm getting here is that it causes a lot of people a lot of grief. I suppose there must be an upside, but I'm struggling to identify it.

OK, so the whole facebook email thing kind of took over, but when are you looking to actually address some of the issues raised here? or are there no solutions to these?
