Create A To-Don’t List To Avoid Repetitive Tasks

Everyone has a to-do list — that list of essential tasks you dread looking at every morning. If you find too much of your day wasted refreshing Facebook or responding to every new email notification by pulling up your inbox, it might be time for a “To-Don’t” list of things you want to remember not to do every day so you can stay productive and focused on the important things.

The blog Marc and Angel Hack Life has an excellent list of things that highly productive people do, but one that stood out for us is the “To-Don’t” list, which is, predictably, the opposite of the classic to-do list. Jot down those bad habits that keep you from being productive on a day to day basis, whether it’s lingering on your inbox or opening it every time a new message comes in, spending too much time reading your favourite blogs, or procrastinating by working on unimportant tasks, and then post the list somewhere you can see it every day — preferably somewhere near your to-do list. This way, whenever you happily go to cross something off your to-do list, you’ll see the to-don’t list as well, which serves as a reminder to stay focused.

Does the idea of yet another list of dos and don’ts sound silly to you, or would a reminder to stop wasting time on the unimportant things and focus on your priorities actually help you stay on task? Share your thoughts — and productivity tips — in the comments below.
