iPhone (Jailbroken): If you hate responding to texts on your phone and would prefer to do it on the desktop, DeskSMS will let you answer your messages via any IM client that supports Google Chat (or you can just use GChat in your browser). It requires a jailbreak and you might run into some setup issues, but it’s definitely worth the trouble.
DeskSMS was originally available for Android only but it’s a very welcome addition to the iPhone, even if it requires a bit of help to function. Here’s what you need to do to get DeskSMS up and running:
- Jailbreak your iPhone.
- Download Notifo from the iTunes App Store (it’s free) and create a (free) account. Then go to your Notifo user settings in your web browser and grab the API key.
- Now go into Cydia on your iPhone and download and install DeskSMS.
- Open the DeskSMS settings on your home screen and fill in the requested credentials (your Notifo username, Notifo API key, Google username, and Google password).
- Close DeskSMS and restart Springboard. (If you don’t know how to do this, install SBSettings via Cydia and it will provide you with a respring button to do this.)
Setting this up should be very easy, but DeskSMS is currently pretty bad at letting you know when there’s a problem. Sometimes I’d get a notification telling me that my Google username and password was wrong (it wasn’t) and sometimes I wouldn’t. Eventually I got it to work by using a different Google account. You may have to mess around for a bit to get it to work. It’s frustrating, but in theory the app will improve and what it provides is so worth the effort that you won’t mind once it functions as expected. Plus, it’s totally free so you have to be thankful for that.
