Stay Positive To Boost Your Career

Many of us have given up on the possibility of being happy at the office; we’re too jaded. But trying to maintain a more positive outlook about your work, even if you dislike it, can make a world of difference in whether you walk out at the end of the day with a smile or scowl on your face.Photo by Eleanor Ryan

We’ve discussed ways to find work that you’ll love, and we’ve discussed why sometimes you shouldn’t make what you love your career, but what do you do if you’re in a job now that you don’t love, you don’t hate, but you still have no desire to go to every morning?

According to CIO Magazine, the solution may be as simple as staying positive at work. That isn’t to say you should just walk around with a smile on your face even if you’re unhappy, but it could be a good start. According to some studies, the jaded ones among us aren’t the ones who get promoted: it’s the positive, grateful, upbeat and sociable ones.

The study shows that workers who make a point to praise others in the workplace, set reasonable goals and hit them, and those who make a point to practice being grateful for even small windfalls are the ones that get ahead.

In the end, doing good work is part of the equation, but sometimes just being happy instead of pessimistic, upbeat instead of jaded, can make a world of difference. Still, it can be really difficult to stay positive when you feel crushed by your work every day. How do you stay positive on the job? Do you grin and bear it, or do you honestly look for the good things and focus on those instead?
