MiMedia Cloud Service Offers 7GB Free Storage, Not Quite Ready Yet

MiMedia officially launched its new cloud media service yesterday, offering 7GB of free storage space and massive upgrades for premium fees. The free 7GB plan stays free forever, while 250GB, 500GB and 1000GB plans cost $US9.99, $US20 and $US35 per month, respectively. There’s just one problem: The web interface is heavy on Flash, and uploading doesn’t seem to work so well.

The service is heavily geared towards media. After logging in, the first thing a user sees is a bar across the top of the page with “Now Playing” and controls for a streaming media player. Very cool in theory, but not so much in practice. The web interface is too buggy to function properly, so unless you’re using a Windows machine, there’s no way to get media files uploaded to stream in the first place.

Just finding the Upload button in the web interface is a hassle. It’s buried about four levels deep in the “Files” section, and that’s the only place it can be found. Once you do find it, trying to upload files only ends in failure — either nothing happens, or Flash outright crashes.

The standalone app is only available for Windows at the moment, though MiMedia says that they hope to release an app for Mac OS X sometime this year. They don’t mention Linux.

Windows users may be able to get some use out of this service since they can download and install the MiMedia app, but without a functional web interface it falls short of its real purpose. Cloud media services are supposed to be accessible from anywhere a user can connect to the internet, after all.
