Use A CD And Suction Cup As A Dirty Dish Indicator

Never struggle again wondering whether your dishwasher needs to be run or emptied. This clever DIY indicator will let you know at a glance, and it can also be adopted for other Yes/No purposes.

Posted by Lifehacker alum Jason Fitzpatrick, this clever CD-plus-suction-cup indicator is easy to make and use. Attach suction cup to your dishwasher. Write on CD. Attach CD to suction cup. Turn CD to dirty or clean.

Now that we know a CD fits perfectly on a suction cup, we can come up with all sorts of additional uses for this cheap tool: attach it to a network printer to indicate if expensive or draft-quality paper has been loaded into it (at work we used a double-sided sign attached to the printer with string, but this is more fun), notify others if the dog has been fed/walked or not, turn it into a decision-making tool (yes/no/maybe/someday, etc.), assign chores by spinning to see whose name comes up, and many others. Thanks, Jason!

What will you use it for? Let us know in the comments.

    You guys obviously don't have toddlers/kids ;)

Is it really that hard to look inside the dishwasher?

Sometimes they look like they're clean when they're not!

Or there might be one bit that looks dirty when everything else is clean!

Or it was just a really empty load so it looks like it's still taking passengers :p

It can't be applied to all dishwashers (e.g., digital ones), but I use the own control knob to sign the status: after the dishwasher is unloaded, I turn the knob to the start of a new cycle. So, if the knob is not at the end of the cycle position, I know that some dirt dishes are living inside the washer.

If it smells like lemons, its clean. If it smells gunky, its dirty. This is a solution looking for a problem.

The technique i like, i read on here i think. If you use powder/blocks. Then just put the powder in after emptying the dishwasher, then you can check for the presence of powder to know if they are clean.
